Ah
you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
- Leonard Cohen
In analysing complicated variations one must
examine each branch of the tree only once.
- Alexander Kotov, "Think Like A Grandmaster"
There are several problems which can arise as a
result of Kotov's method. The most obvious is that it can be extremely
inefficient...A second problem is that it fails to take into account the
synergistic effect of analysing several lines. The analysis of move A and move B
are very often not independent of one another. Suppose you have rejected move A,
but when analysing move B you suddenly notice a tactical possibility. It makes
sense to return to move A to see if the same possibility is applicable there.
- John Nunn, "Secrets of Practical Chess"
To lose
one's objective attitude to a position, nearly always means ruining your game.
- Bronstein
“Live life fully while
you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have
fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you
might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your
mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be
perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.”
- Anthony Robbins
The secret of reaping the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment
from life is to live dangerously. - Friedrich Nietzsche
If you can't beat your computer at chess, try
kick-boxing."

Pawns cannot move backwards. If you inadvertently put a piece on a bad
square, you can always retract it at the cost of some time (and face), but in
the case of a pawn you are lumbered with it for the rest of the game. Think
twice about pawn moves especially in the centre.
- Michael
Stean, "Simple Chess"
A chess game can hinge on the battle for control of one key square.
